Biodiesel is the fuel of the future because it is sustainable whether it’s made from rapeseed oil or used cooking oils.  With mineral oil due to dry up in 30-40 years, (and the harm that fossil fuel will do to the environment in that time!), it seems that, without doubt, bio fuel is the way to go.

The first diesel engine was engineered to be run on peanut oil and not mineral oils, which is the norm at the moment. Most car manufacturers recognise Biodiesel as a ‘real’ fuel and will honour warranties as a result.
Tests that we have carried out found that there was no difference in performance and produced slightly better fuel economy with no harmful emissions.

The by-product from the transformation of used cooking oil to Biodiesel is glycerin. 
This is a natural degreaser which can be used for most cleaning applications. 
It is totally bio-degradable, so if it is spilt down drains or on the garden micro-organisms will attack and degrade it naturally, with no harmful effect.
We are now working on ways to refine the glycerin, removing methanol, moisture and impurities and will be selling glycerin as a biodegradable degreaser for the automotive and agricultural industry.

Greenstar Biofuels intends to supply Biodiesel at first to bulk users or fleet operators. The benefit of this is that company vehicles are being taxed on the emissions of each vehicle - and with Bio-Diesel's nil emissions there is a money-saving benefit straight away for companies.  

At the present time we collect about 80,000–100,000 litres of used cooking oil a week which is currently used under strict controls for animal feed. This could treble in the next year or so because of a possible ban and people in the catering and associated industries will need to find somewhere else to dispose of it. This is where we would come in, having a small plant at the moment which we will develop as time goes on.


A certainty! As for prices, Greenstar Biofuels feel that per litre it should be less by a few pence than diesel is at the moment, as long as the government keep or lower the duty on Bio-Diesel which, at the moment, is 27p litre compared to 47p for diesel. I think the government should themselves be looking to introduce Biodiesel into the market place within the next few years -say 2-3% of total fuel used in the UK, increasing to 10% in ten years. A good political plus point!.

The hole in the ozone layer isn’t getting any smaller, so it’s time to develop Bio-fuels and abolish fossil fuels. Let’s look after our environment.
